Careful not to get lost in the juicy flavor and crush too many of these- or you too will be dead and gone. We had a few options to choose from, but we ultimately settled on Dead + Gone (Ghost 867), a soft hazy with explosions of papaya and mango dangerously disguising a 10% ABV. This year was no different, as they make the Best IPAs list for the second year running. Thick and juicy with a nice dank finish, this beer had us paraphrasing the movie Training Day– “King Kong ain’t got nothing on Green Gorilla.” Now we’re wondering if our grandparents in South Florida are interested in working as craft beer mules…Įver since our first visit to Adroit Theory’s taproom in Purcellville in 2018, they’ve been a regular in our Best Of lists since the site began. Our first exposure was a monster: Green Gorilla, a 10.1% ABV hazy triple double dry hopped with strata. We’ve heard praise for 3 Sons, a Fort Lauderdale-area micro brewery, all the way on the West Coast, but we’d never had a chance to try any of their beer until 2020. It was difficult enough cutting down the hundreds and hundreds of IPAs we had this year down to such a short list, choosing individual beers from breweries like Monkish, Bissell Brothers, Russian River, Moonraker, etc.? Why do we punish ourselves so? Yet while there are so many we’ve had that are worthy of being on the list, these forty IPAs stand out as the ones we simply can’t leave off. Not all of them were introduced to the market last year, but just like with our lists of the best sour beers of 2020 and the best stouts of 2020, we’re basing our list on date of consumption, not on date of initial creation.Īlso like our other lists, we’re only allowing ourselves to put one beer per brewery. (Also, like pizza slices, it’s difficult to have just one IPA.) Below is a list of the best IPAs we had in 2020. You can change the ingredients, you can make it simpler or heavier, you can make it crisper or softer… but as long as the basic formula is the same, we will love it no matter what. Or you could spend a few days traveling along the hauntingly beautiful coast, stopping wherever you feel like to take in the views or spend the night. For us, the IPA is the pizza of the beer world. A stay in Bodega Bay provides opportunities for hiking along sea cliffs or sandy beach, whale watching from shore or an ocean-going boat, sleeping in a beautiful inn with ocean views or camping on the beach at Doran Regional Park, and much more. Visitors can enjoy the sanctuary in an endless ways. The sanctuary also shelters cultural resources such as shipwrecks or Native American artifacts serves as a valuable research resource and offers opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, boating and tourism. The amazing diversity of marine life here includes 25 endangered species, 38 species of marine mammals like humpback whales, and one of the planet's largest white shark populations. The sanctuary provides significant breeding and feeding grounds - including open ocean, rocky intertidal areas, wetlands, subtidal reefs and coastal beaches - for an abundance of aquatic species, including many that are endangered or threatened. The 3,295-square-mile Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary lies off the northern California coast, and includes the waters along Sonoma County's 55-mile coastline. You can see this miniature forest by following the park's looping 3.8-mile Pygmy Forest Trail. Situated at the highest elevation within Salt Point State Park, the pygmy forest is populated with stands of tiny pine and cypress trees - and even a small-fry version of the usually gigantic redwood tree. When fully mature, the trees are perfect miniature versions of their species, but only a few feet tall. Acidic soils and other environmental factors deprived the trees here of the nutrients needed to grow normally. In the northern reaches of Sonoma's coast lies one of the world's wonderful oddities: a pygmy forest. The park has more than 20 miles of hiking and equestrian trails surf fishing is extremely good and the rocky waters are popular with abalone divers. Delicate-looking but enduring, it's sometimes called stonelace. Riddled with honeycomb-type erosion that produces ribs, ridges, holes, and other patterns, the Tafoni takes on infinite lacy shapes, patterns, and complexity. It's a place of steep sea cliffs, surf crashing against rugged rocks, fantastic sunsets, and fascinating Tafoni sandstone sculpture. Located on the coast about four miles north of Fort Ross, the 6,000-acre Salt Point State Park is known for its dramatic beauty.
